New 23rd St. Café offers fresh, healthy menu and innovative ordering

SAVOR…Chicago recently opened 23rd St. Café & Market with a sustainable, healthy menu and innovative bilingual touchscreen ordering. The 23rd St. Café & Market gives attendees choices in menu and service options with a seated Café section and a “grab-n-go” Market. Connected to the Main Concourse by a new bridge, the Café’s menu items feature ingredients grown in SAVOR…Chicago’s Rooftop Garden.

NRA Show Tour: Tomato Plants, Honey Bees and Earthworms

Those are just a few of the living things that National Restaurant Association Show attendees saw when they toured the Midwest’s largest rooftop garden atop McCormick Place’s West Building. The two+ acres of gardens are home to more than 1,500 tomato and pepper plants, garlic, basil and lettuce used in SAVOR…Chicago’s menu as well as honey bee hives and composting earthworms.

Working with the Chicago Botanic Garden, SAVOR…Chicago has planted the largest farm-to-fork rooftop garden in the Midwest as part of its ongoing mission to promote local sustainable agriculture and train city residents for urban agriculture careers.

First Look Event Feeds 10,000 Attendees

The Chicago Auto Show’s First Look for Charity event, one of the city’s largest high-profile charity events, featured culinary fare from SAVOR…Chicago that delighted 10,000 event attendees. SAVOR…Chicago prepared 80,000 individual servings along with 37,000 beverages. The Olympic-themed party included 15 private charity events before the First Look event.

8,000 lbs. of farm fresh produce...

...straight from the West Building's 2.5 acre rooftop garden to the 23rd Street Café & Market where guests can sample the fresh goodness by choosing a “Windy City Harvest” menu item like the Tuna Croissant with Lemon Dill Aioli & Rooftop Carrot Slaw . This summer's garden harvest includes 8,000 lbs. of fresh beets, kale, lettuce and 48 other types of vegetables and herbs. Also at home in the garden are 20,000 honey bees that pollinate the many plants and produce 50 lbs. of honey. Now that's sweet.
